Recognizing Bipolar Disorder

Experiencing Significant Changes in Mood, Energy, or Sleep?

Bipolar disorder involves episodes of depression and periods of unusually high mood or energy. These high periods are called mania or hypomania (a milder form of mania). They can affect sleep, energy, judgment, and daily life. Symptoms and episode patterns vary from person to person.

Depressive Episodes

Periods of persistent low mood, reduced energy, or loss of interest.

Elevated or Irritable Mood

Periods of unusually elevated or irritable mood.

Changes in Energy

Periods of unusually increased energy or activity, sometimes followed by depressive symptoms.

Reduced Need for Sleep

Sleeping much less than usual without feeling tired during a period of elevated mood.

Racing Thoughts

Experiencing unusually rapid thoughts or increased talkativeness during mood episodes.

Changes in Judgment or Behavior

Periods of increased impulsivity, risky behavior, or actions that are noticeably different from the person's usual self.

These experiences can have causes other than bipolar disorder, and a thorough evaluation can help clarify what is happening. These episodes are different from everyday mood swings, and having these symptoms does not by itself mean you have bipolar disorder. Not everyone experiences every symptom.

Important safety note

Zyra provides scheduled outpatient psychiatric care and is not an emergency, crisis, or acute stabilization service. Symptoms of severe mania, psychosis, significant impairment, or immediate risk of harm may require urgent in-person evaluation or a higher level of care. If you are in immediate crisis or danger, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), dial 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.

Specialized Psychiatric Care

Bipolar Disorder Care That Starts With a Thorough Evaluation

Understanding bipolar disorder requires looking at patterns of mood, energy, sleep, and behavior over time. Our psychiatric providers carefully review your symptoms, treatment history, and overall mental health to develop an individualized care plan.

Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation

A thorough review of your current and past mood episodes, medical and mental health history, sleep patterns, medications, daily functioning, and other conditions that may occur alongside bipolar disorder.

Individualized Treatment Planning

Treatment decisions based on the type of bipolar disorder, mood episode history, symptom severity, previous treatment response, and individual needs.

Ongoing Psychiatric Monitoring

Regular follow-up visits to monitor mood stability, medication response, side effects, and any changes in your care needs.

Evaluations may identify conditions other than bipolar disorder or conditions occurring alongside it. A diagnosis is not guaranteed during the initial appointment, and medication is not always required.

Understanding the Diagnosis

Understanding Bipolar I and Bipolar II Disorder

Bipolar I Disorder

Involves at least one manic episode. Depressive episodes commonly occur but are not required for diagnosis.

Bipolar II Disorder

Involves at least one hypomanic episode and at least one major depressive episode, without a history of a manic episode.

Telling the difference between the two requires a thorough clinical evaluation. Bipolar II is not simply a milder version of Bipolar I.

Treatment Options

Personalized Treatment and Medication Management for Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder often requires ongoing psychiatric care and careful medication management. Treatment plans are individualized based on your diagnosis, symptoms, treatment history, and response to medication.

Mood-Stabilizing Medications

Treatment may include mood stabilizers and certain other medications (sometimes called atypical antipsychotics) when clinically appropriate. Not every medication is right for every person or every type of mood episode. Prescriptions are never guaranteed and depend on your evaluation, medical need, and prescribing requirements.

Medication Monitoring and Adjustment

Ongoing checks of how well the medication is working, how well you tolerate it, and any side effects. When needed, lab work or physical health checks help your provider make informed treatment adjustments over time.

Ongoing Psychiatric Care

Regular follow-up visits help spot early warning signs, support healthy sleep and daily routines, and coordinate with therapy or other support when appropriate.
